, and welcome to the Bath and Camerton Archaeological Society's website.

About the Society
The Bath & Camerton Archaeological Society known as BACAS was formed in 1949 as the Camerton Excavation Club by the late Bill Wedlake and had Sir Mortimer Wheeler as its President. The Society has been involved in some major excavations over the past fifty years, at the small towns of Camerton, Nettleton and at many other sites in the surrounding area.

This website has been produced to give Society members, and other people interested in our activities, information on our 2012 Training Excavation near Frome in Somerset, our annual lecture programme and our summer excursions to local sites of archaeological interest.

You can find a list of BACAS events, including open days from the Events page.

The Society has its own geophysics equipment - a Gradiometer and Resistance Meter - and welcomes members' initiatives and student projects. In order to facilitate them we have produced a short form so that geophysics equipment and help can be requested formally. You will find this form on the Geophysics page.

Excursions are organised during the summer months, including both evening walks and day trips to archaeological sites. A series of lectures is run during the winter months.

The Society also publishes an annual journal 'Camertonia' packed with articles about current projects and other items of interest to members. Newsletters are mailed out during the year, to keep members up to date with activities.
