BACAS picked a sunny evening to visit Calne for a walk with Nick Baxter , a local historian. Many people remember the large Harris pork factory that dominated the town until the 1980s but we discovered the many interesting mediaeval buildings from the wool times, its canal and castle remains and celebrity inhabitants including Joseph Priestley and Samuel Coleridge. Interestingly even the pork industry originated from the 18th century when pigs were herded on a drove route from Bristol to Smithfield Market in London and those that didn’t look like they’d make it were bought by John and Sarah Harris, the local butchers !
