Summary

A guided tour of Bath Abbey & Perrymead cemeteries will be led by Dr Phil Bendall who created the Bath Burial index, giving their history and characteristics and pointing out the memorials for various notable people and the reasons for them being notable. Both cemeteries contain Grade II-listed memorials and the mortuary chapel in Perrymead cemetery was Grade II listed on the grounds of architectural interest as a good example of mid-C19 Gothic Revival architecture on a modest scale.

Meeting time and place.

Perrymead Cemetery entrance at 6.30pm

Comfortable, suitable clothes and footwear should be worn suitable for the prevailing weather conditions. The excursion will involve walking on some quite steep and uneven gradients.

Free parking is available in Pope’s Walk outside Perrymead Cemetery (BA2 5AX) …see map below. Pope’s Walk is the first turning left off Perrymead which is the second turn right at the end of Prior Park Road as it begins to climb up the hill (Ralph Allen Drive) from Widcombe.

The No. 2 bus between the city centre and Combe Down has stops near the Perrymead turning.
