A Sunday morning stroll around Bradford on Avon led by Ivor Slocombe, a local
historian of note having published widely on the subject. The walk will last about an
hour and a half but will be restricted to 20 people, the streets are mostly narrow and
more bodies would be difficult to manage.
The tour takes in the architecture of the town ranging from weavers’ cottages to the
18th century houses of the rich clothiers. Other features include the Saxon Church,
medieval bridges and lock up, Barton Farm and the 14th century Tithe Barn and the
Iron Duke harking back to the 19th century rubber industry.
Bradford has its own museum housing a “rescued” Victorian chemist’s shop and a
range of general exhibits from Roman times through to the industrial age. At the time
of writing this remains closed but possibly it might have re-opened by then in
which case a visit in the afternoon would complete our outing after a picnic or lunch
in one the local eateries. Should the museum not be open there are is plenty of
exploring in the town or for the more energetic a walk along the Kennet and Avon
Canal to the Avoncliff aqueduct temptingly close to The Crossed Guns PH.
