Geophysics Open Days, High Common, Bath, 19 and 20 July

Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 July 2022, 11am, 12:30pm, 2:00pm
Geophysics Open Days, High Common, Bath

Come and see a geophysical survey of an archaeological site and have a go yourself.

BACAS is going to be carrying out a geophysical survey of a site in Bath in late July. Tuesday 19 and Wednesday 20 July will be Open Days when we will show you what we are doing and how it all works to give a picture of what is below ground. Then you will be given the opportunity to try using the equipment yourself.

Note this an event for non-members. Members who wish to take part in the survey should contact Janet Pryke, projects@bacas.org.uk.

This site is one of those being investigated by BACAS as part of the Bathscape project (supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund).

Numbers will be limited and booking is essential. There will be 3 timed sessions each day lasting one hour each with a maximum of 6 visitors per session: 11:00-12:00, 12:30-1:30, 2:00-3:00.

Suitable for ages 12+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are free and bookable on Eventbrite.

Clothing and footwear: please be prepared for the chance of rain. Stout shoes or boots are recommended.

This event is part of the Festival of Archaeology, the UK’s biggest celebration of archaeology.

How to take part:

Participants will need to be able to make their own way to the site. Parking in this area is mostly rather expensive and so far most people have preferred to walk there or take public transport (including the Park and Ride from Newbridge along the Upper Bristol Road or down from Lansdown). There is a bus service from central Bath. Full directions will be provided nearer the time. We will be able to use the golf course office toilet facilities.

Archaeology fieldwork is a physical activity but every measure possible will be taken to ensure that everyone can join in. Access to the field may not be possible for people with limited mobility. If you have specific access requirements, please let us know in advance and we will do our best to support you.

If participants have to self-isolate, or experience Covid symptoms prior to the date of the event, they will be asked not to attend.

Wet weather

The event will go ahead unless the weather conditions are extreme. Please check your joining email for updates or changes to the eventClothing and footwear: the weather can be very changeable. Please be prepared for rain. Stout shoes or boots are recommended.
