Geophysics Open Days, Royal Victoria Park, Bath, 28 and 29 July

Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 July 2025, 11am, 12pm, 1:30pm, 2:30pm
Geophysics Open Days, Royal Victoria Park, Bath

Come and see a geophysical survey of an archaeological site and have a go yourself.

BACAS is going to be carrying out a geophysical survey of a site in Bath in late July. Monday 28 and Tuesday 29 July will be Open Days when we will show you what we are doing and how it all works to give a picture of what is below ground. Then you will be given the opportunity to try using the equipment yourself.

Note this is an event for non-members. Members who wish to take part in the survey should contact Janet Pryke, projects@bacas.org.uk.

This site is one of those being investigated by BACAS as part of the Bathscape project (supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund).

This event is part of the Festival of Archaeology, the UK’s biggest celebration of archaeology.

Numbers will be limited and booking is essential. There will be 4 timed sessions each day lasting one hour each with a maximum of 6 visitors per session: 11:00-12:00, 12:00-1:00, 1:30-2:30, 2:30-3:30.

Suitable for ages 12+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tickets are free and bookable on Eventbrite.

How to take part:

Participants will need to be able to make their own way to the site. Parking in this area is mostly rather expensive and so far most people have preferred to walk there or take public transport (including the Park and Ride from Newbridge along the Upper Bristol Road or down from Lansdown). There is a bus service from central Bath. Full directions will be provided nearer the time.

Archaeology fieldwork is a physical activity but every measure possible will be taken to ensure that everyone can join in. Access may not be possible for people with limited mobility. If you have specific access requirements, please let us know in advance and we will do our best to support you.

Wet weather

The event will go ahead unless the weather conditions are extreme. Please check your joining email for updates or changes to the event

Clothing and footwear: the weather can be very changeable. Please be prepared for rain. Stout shoes or boots are recommended.
