Bristol Cathedral and 1831 Riots Tour : Thursday 24th April (All Day)

We start with a guided tour of the Cathedral to hear of its path from an Augustine Abbey founded in 1140 to its survival after the Dissolution. During the afternoon we learn of the events of October 1831 when riots about the Reform Bill lasted for three days with many casualties and the burning of much of the city centre.

Lydney Quay and the Lost Fleet : Saturday 17th May (Afternoon)

An afternoon at Lydney Quay will show us how this harbour has lasted since Roman times as integral to the economy of the Bristol Channel in the trading of coal, iron ore and other commodities and the many vessels that sailed the Severn, navigating its strong tides.
Three more beautiful Somerset village churches to visit, this time all in the Chew Valley at Chewton Mendip, East Harptree and Compton Martin, followed by a likely call on the Ring o’ Bells.

Ebbor Gully Cave : Monday 28th July (Afternoon)

Gully Cave in Ebbor Gorge, Somerset is a site of palaeoecological significance dating back at least 45000 years. Substantial Pleistocene deposits of vanished species, including Auroch, Spotted Hyena and Arctic Fox, as well as evidence of hominin inhabitation have been found. The University of London have been excavating the cave annually since 2006 slowly exposing ever more ancient remains. We will be visiting the cave during this year’s dig to see the work in progress and hear about the finds.
<<<< Please note there is a challenging walk from the car park to the cave of about one mile, mainly up a steep hill, with a height gain of over 300 ft and rugged paths >>>>>

Beckington Village Walk : Thursday 7th August (Evening)

Some of us visited Beckington church last year and our guide will continue this tour with a walk around the village. It is noted for its many medieval buildings when wealth came from a major role in the wool trade, centred on the Wool Hall which in recent times became a famous recording studio.

Newport Ship and Town Museum : Thursday 4th September (All Day)

Following the BRLSI talk this February on the Newport Medieval Ship we will be visiting the Ship Museum in Newport to see progress on its reconstruction followed by a tour of the Town Museum with its collections chronicling local history from prehistoric times to the arrival of the Normans.
