New report: Dyrham Park Geophysics 2025

The prime objective of this project was to survey a perfect circle of 34 metres diameter, that
appears in the LIDAR scans that were commissioned by the National Trust in 2019 The circle is in the parkland, just over 100m NE of the topograph in the northern section of the park.

The objective is to try to establish what the ring might be, including possibilities of a henge or a disc barrow. At 34m diameter, this is rather large for the more usual round barrow. However, disc barrows can be significantly larger.

The project was conducted over two days using magnetometry, resistance and resistivity profiling. The magnetometry and the profiling produced good data, but surface resistance less so, probably due to recent dry weather.

The circle and other features were revealed with a circle diameter of around 39m. Therefore, the LIDAR circle may be a ditch and the magnetometry circle a circular bank. Near the centre of the circle there appears to be an anomaly, showing in the LIDAR, the magnetometry and the profiles.

Recommendations are made for a future project to excavate the circle in three areas, two on the circumference and one in the centre.
